Heard throughout the WHKP "broadcast day" with news and weather updates. Larry started his career at WHKP 50 years ago as a teenager. He is WHKP's NEWS and PROGRAM DIRECTOR, managing local and regional NEWS and WHKP's station editorials. He is also responsible for the content and quality of programs you hear on WHKP.
Keeping our community well informed has been his top priority for most of his adult, working life. Larry first joined WHKP in November, 1963 when, while a sophomore at Hendersonville High School, he was assigned to cover for our radio stations (WHKP-AM and FM) details of local reaction to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He attended Hendersonville public schools and graduated from Hendersonville High School. He also attended University of North Carolina-Asheville where he studied Liberal Arts and Political Science. Over the years, Larry has was involved in news and programming at WLOS radio and TV in Asheville and WSPA radio and TV in Spartanburg.
Throughout his broadcast career and his adult life, Larry has been active in community affairs. He has served on the Mayor's Committee on Human Relations, the Courthouse Committee,and the county Planning Board.
In addition to his work with WHKP, Larry also serves as the mayor of the Town of Mills River. Having been elected to the Mills River Town Council in 2009, he was re-elected in 2013 and in December of 2013, he was elected mayor by his fellow Council members. As mayor, he actively represents Mills River on various boards...including the French Broad River Metropolitcan Planning Organization, the Partnership For Economic Development, and the county LGCCA. He served on the board of directors of Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital and the hospital board's Finance Committee for nine years. Active in Henderson County Republican party politics, Larry serves on the county's GOP Executive Committee as chairman of the North Mills River precinct.
He and his wife Karen live in the Mills River community. Larry is a 32nd degree mason, a member of the scottish rite, and is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He is a member and Lay Leader at Fanning Chapel United Methodist Church in Mills River. They have three daughters and one son...two cats and two miniature schnausers, Cloe and Punkin. Their two latest "grandchildren", Haley and Kayla, are the joys of their lives.
Larry and WHKP News and Public Affairs have won numerous awards over the years from both Associated Press and United Press International for best radio local news coverage, broadcast editorials, and "feature" news stories in North and South Carolina.
In 2009, Larry was recognized by the Abraham Kuykendall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution with their Man Of The Year award for community service.
