A kayaker was reported missing shortly after going onto the Green River Friday. The kayaker failed to arrive for a scheduled pick up at Galimore Rd. in the Big Hungry area of Henderson County . The missing person was identified as Jenai Taree Bounds, 45 years of age, of Polk County. Ms. Bounds had made arrangements to be picked up between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm at Galimore Rd. Deputies located the missing person’s vehicle on Pot Shoals Rd. and a member of the Blue Ridge Fire Dept. reported to have spoken with the victim there around 3:30 PM as she was putting her boat in the Green River. It was also reported to a deputy the victim did not take a helmet or a life jacket and was barefoot. The Blue Ridge Fire Dept. was contacted to initiate a ground search. Due to the rugged terrain and darkness, the North Carolina Highway Patrol helicopter was requested to assist in the search.
The aircrew located Ms. Bounds just after 2 AM and reported she was sitting on a rock waving at the helicopter near Peter Guice Bridge just off of I-26. They relayed Ms. Bound's location to the Command Post and the operation moved from Pot Shoals Rd to just off the bridge on I-26 as this was the closest location to access the missing party. One lane of traffic on the Interstate was closed for the safety of the rescue crews working from the bridge area. At 2:25 AM a six person rescue crew left on foot from Peter Guice Bridge. Guided by the helicopter, the Rescue crew was able to hike to the location of the missing person. The terrain was very rugged and the victim was reported to be in good condition. For safety reasons, the rescue crew waited until daylight to walk the victim out of the gorge.
