LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOL YEAR EXTENDED BECAUSE OF SNOW DAYS

This year's public school year now extended due to missed snow days...the question remains...will more days be missed?

An all new set of school calendars presented Monday to the Henderson County School Board will keep spring break intact by moving five snow makeup days to the end of the year.

Superintendent David Jones told board members the school system still has to make up five of eight days missed because of snow and ice. But he said state rules allow them to push the traditional calendar's last day of school from June 6 to June 13.

“What this allows us to do is maintain spring break,” Jones said. “It also allows us to maintain Memorial Day, and not at this time (have to) go on Saturdays.”

Jones said school administrators have signed off on the revised calendars, as well as a teacher advisory committee. The schools also conducted surveys, he said, in which they heard from “many, many parents who prefer to keep spring break intact.”

For the district's two year-round schools, Bruce Drysdale and Hendersonville elementaries, the last day of school will be June 5. Jones said principals and staff at those schools also preferred keeping spring break from April 14-18. The last day for Early College High students will be May 30.
