As WHKP News has been reporting, Hendersonville High senior Aleigha Edwards was earlier named the local "Youth of the Year"...and now the Boys & Girls Club statewide organization named her its North Carolina Youth of the Year on Saturday in Greensboro.

Taking the highest honor a member of the local Boys & Girls Club can receive in January, Edwards was named Youth of the Year  for Henderson County and moved onto state competition. Her victory at the state level was announced in an item posted on the club's Facebook page.

State winners each receive $1,000 scholarships and will go on to participate in regional competitions. The National Youth of the Year is eligible for a $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the president of the United States.

After she won her local title, Edwards described how the Boys and Girls Club helped her overcome negative peer pressure and feelings of insecurity and emerged from it, “focused, compassionate, empowered and inspired.”

She hopes to study elementary education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
