COUNTY PLANNING BOARD REJECTS PLANS FOR 299-UNIT ETOWAH DEVELOPMENT

ON 233 ACRES ON MCKINNEY ROAD IN ETOWAH

The master plan for  a proposed 299-units development in the Etowah community was rejected by the county’s Planning Board Thursday/; That board voted 4 to 3 to turn down plans for “The Farm At Eagles Nest” submitted by Florida developer John Turchin. Planning Board Chairman Steve Dozier cast the tie-breaking vote.

Dozens of Etowah residents crowded into the meeting room late Thursday to oppose the proposed 299-unit development.

Planning Board member Rick Livingston seemed to sum up the feelings of those opposed to the project, and the majority on the Planning Board, by opposing the development due to a lack of infrastructure to handle a development that large.

The development was proposed for 233 acres known as the Hammond property on McKinney Road.

A traffic impact study indicated there would have to be steps taken to adequately handle traffic around the development. And there are still issues
concerning adequate sewer and wastewater facilities for the development.

Developer Turchin submitted new plans for another large development on Rugby Road...but it was no clear Thursday when, or if, new plans will be submitted for the McKinney Road development in Etowah.
