Walter Alexander Houston passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at his home with the love of his life, Sherry, by his side. A compassionate and humorous patriarch of the Houston family, Alex embraced life to the fullest. Alex was born in Hendersonville, NC to John Bell and Mary Jo Houston on June 4, 1932. Surprising his parents by throwing his voice at the age of 3, Alex entertained audiences with his ventriloquism skills for over 80 years.

While in high school and at Brevard College, Alex traveled the US, Europe and Japan with his father's dance team, the Echo Inn Cloggers. They won multiple national championships. Early in his career, Alex and his dummy partner Elmer were regulars on the "The Jimmy Dean Show" on TV from 1957-1959. Moving to Tennessee, Alex hosted his own show "The Alex and Elmer Show" for 3 years and later worked on "Hee Haw". Alex & Elmer opened for Charley Pride, Barbara Mandrell, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Conway Twitty, Alabama, Ronnie Millsap and many other country stars for over 30 years, as well as performing on the Grand Ole Opry. Alex lived out his retirement in the Smoky Mountains while still performing in several venues in Florida, with his partner/friend Jimmy Smith and his wife Emma. He also performed in Pigeon Forge theaters and other community venues.

Alex enjoyed golfing, scuba-diving, hiking, Dodgers baseball, UT sports and most of all cruising in the Caribbean. He adored his wife, Sherry, and loved his three girls deeply. His unwavering faith in God was a source of comfort and support throughout his life. Alex is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Sherry; his "little buddy" Elmer; daughters Laurie Houston Canham (Bob), Bonnie Houston Solomon (Scott), Cindy Houston Hazen, Jennifer Stidham; sons, Matthew Stidham and Sam Stidham; and grandchildren, Will Roland (Jami), Eric Clark (Ashley), Alexandria Solomon, Leighton Solomon, Brianna Bennett (John), Mykah Stidham, Alyssa Stidham, Chloe Stidham, and 5 great grandchildren. A special acknowledgement to our dear extended Stidham family. The family would like to thank the many "angels on earth" who cared for Alex with kindness and love, including the caregivers from Avalon Hospice; Michael (aka "Matthew"), Sherry's "rocks" Lisa and Peachye, our wonderful neighbors, our supportive church family, and our many friends. A very special thanks to Alex and Sherry's Pastors, Sandra Roach and Tony Roberts, and Chaplain Mark Kitts. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Avalon Hospice, Sevierville, TN.

A visitation will be held on March 17, 2018, from 1:00 p.m – 3:00 pm at Life Changers International Church in Pigeon Forge - Alex and Sherry's church.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 3 pm at the church. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, TN. Online condolences can be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
