NEW PHONE SCAM TARGETS HENDERSONVILLE/AREA DUKE ENERGY CUSTOMERS

NEW PHONE SCAM TARGETS HENDERSONVILLE/AREA DUKE ENERGY CUSTOMERS NEW PHONE SCAM TARGETS HENDERSONVILLE/AREA DUKE ENERGY CUSTOMERS

SHERIFF SAYS IT'S ONLY A SCAM

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office wishes to notify the community of a phone scam circulating in the area. Residents and businesses have been receiving calls appearing to be from Duke Energy in which a scammer threatens electrical cut-off within the hour if payment is not made.

When voice messages are left, potential victims are asked to call a number that has a similar phone directory message to that of Duke Energy’s actual customer service number. In a manner typical of recent phone scams, the scammers are demanding payment in the form of pre-paid cards. Sheriff Charles McDonald reminds the public to never give out personal information over the phone.

“A red flag should go up any time payment is requested through the purchase of ‘green dot’ cards, gift cards or any other type of prepaid cards,” said McDonald.

The Sheriff advises that if there is ever a question concerning overdue bills or fees, for citizens to hang up and call the company or organization directly. If you have been a victim of a scam, contact the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 697-4911.
