Close
to the End of the Year
Superintendent Tom Burnham
We have finally completed the third nine weeks. Hopefully, the inclement weather is over, and we can finish the remainder of this school year on schedule. As of right now, the last day of school is Thursday, May 29. If one more day is missed, Monday, April 21, will become a school day and the last day of school will be May 29. If two more days are missed, April 21 will be a school day and the last day of school will be Friday, May 30.
On January 27, I had the privilege of presenting one of our elementary students with a framed letter and a check for $30. Before the Christmas holidays, Patrick Owens, a student at Hendersonville Elementary, found thirty dollars in the yard outside of our administrative offices. He brought this money inside to the front desk to be returned to the rightful owner. The money went unclaimed. We felt that Patrick should receive the money and recognition for his honesty. His decision to return the money he found demonstrated very strong character and high values. He is definitely an example for all of us to follow.
We are gearing up for ABCs testing. Please help by having your child eat properly and secure rest the night before tests are given. Studies have shown that doing these things contribute to the students alertness. Please note that testing dates are listed in this newsletter as well as on our website. However, remember that testing dates are subject to change for various reasons. The schools will always advise students of the correct dates.
The School Board and Senior Staff worked very hard January 31 and February 1 on our Strategic Plan. Each year we meet to discuss the systems goals and objectives to see what has been accomplished and to set priorities on what needs to be accomplished. We are making excellent progress on meeting the goals we have set for the children of Henderson County Public Schools. We are very fortunate to have an excellent Board, strong leadership in our schools and the support of our County Commissioners.
We continue to make progress with our facilities. The classroom additions at Flat Rock and Rugby Middle Schools will be completed in time for the start of the 2003-2004 school year. Construction at Hendersonville Middle School should be completed by January of 2004.
Good things are continuing in Henderson County Public Schools. You will notice in this newsletter a very long list of students and their achievements that was provided by our principals. We want our parents to know what our students are doing.
Kindergarten registration will take place in April. I am very pleased to announce that this year our kindergarten parents will be presented with a new publication, What Your Child Will Learn In Kindergarten. It is written in an easy to read format and is very informative. Both you and your child will enjoy reading it and will continue to use this resource.
As always, we encourage you to take an active role in the education of your children. You are the first teacher they have you are their role model. Spend time reading with them on a daily basis, urge them to go that extra step, attend functions with them, ask them about their day, and simply listen to what they have to say. You might be surprised at what you learn. Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns about your child.
