HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A woodworking class from North Henderson High School was awarded first place and a $400 prize in the inaugural "Pawrade of Homes."

The "Pawrade of Homes" is part of a workforce development initiative put on by the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

'PAWRADE OF HOMES' PUTS STUDENTS’ DOGHOUSES IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT WNC BUILD EXPO

As part of the program, local high school students were tasked with designing and building a doghouse.

The houses debuted during the WNC Build and Remodeled Expo held in March.

From drawing up designs and construction plans to building the walls and roof of the doghouse, 13 students participated in the build.

Teachers hope the project will help students prepare for the future.

“We really need young people to get into the field because you can't have AI build a house. People have to get out there, learn how to use the tools, and produce something that's going to last for years and years," said George Mraz, a woodworking teacher at North Henderson High School.
