The 2025-2026 U.S. Winter Weather Forecast from the 2026 Old Farmer's Almanac was released on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025.

While much of the country is forecast to experience a mild winter, the Old Farmer's Almanac predicts Asheville and the southern Appalachians will experience colder temperatures and more snow between December and March.

There will also be a split snow story, with lighter snowfall in the north and heavier snowfall in the south.

The Old Farmer's Almanac's forecast highlights below for region 3, the Appalachians:

  • Temperatures: Below normal
  • Coldest periods: Mid- and late December, early and late January, early February
  • Precipitation: Below normal
  • Snowfall: Below normal in the north and above south; the most snow will arrive in late December, late January, early and late February, mid-March
