Sheriff Lowell Griffin would like to warn that theft from vehicles has recently increased Henderson County. Over the course of the past two weeks the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports of vehicles being broken into.  The majority of these incidents have occurred during the nighttime hours and from unlocked vehicles.  

Several incidents have been reported recently at local Henderson County parks where the thieves actually broke the window to remove items left in plain view.

Residents can prevent and/or reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of these types of crimes by removing valuables and any spare keys from vehicles and locking vehicles when they are left unattended.

Having your vehicle or property stolen can be inconvenient and costly, and can also lead to additional victimization.  If a suspect is able to obtain personal information from items in a vehicle, you are susceptible to becoming a victim of identity theft. Also, thieves have used stolen vehicles in the commission of other crimes.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office wants you to lower your risk of becoming a victim of auto theft and theft from vehicle by urging you to follow these safety tips:

• Always lock your car and take the keys. Never leave your valet key in the car.

• Never leave valuables in view, even if your car is locked!

• Remove ALL electronic cords and mounts from sight.

• Stash your valuables before you park! Place all shopping items in the trunk or hide them prior to reaching your destination.

• Completely close car windows.

• Avoid parking between large vehicles.

• Take out removable radios/face plates.

• Be alert and call 911 to report suspicious activity. 

Many of these vehicle-related crimes occur overnight.  The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to immediately call 9-1-1 if they observe any suspicious behavior or activity.
