With the Measles outbreak in some 22 states in the country, it is definitely being brought to attention locally here close to home in Henderson County. WHKP's Tippy Creswell spoke with Dr. Dianne Curran, she is Medical Director with the Henderson County Dept of Public Health.

Dr. Curran did shed some light, on the recent Measles outbreak, and how it can prevented through the usual vaccination. So far there have been no reported cases of Measles in the Henderson County area.

Heavy travel season is coming up as we approach the Summer months, and it is always good to stay informed, and be cautious of Measles, and the exact areas of the US where the outbreak has occured. Dr. Dianne Curran does state, and make mention, that it is imperative to keep a watchful eye, on the outbreaks. Vaccination prevention is key to staying healthy.

Many people were vaccinated as children, and it should still be effective as an adult. The vast majority are ok, and will remain protected. Blood testing is usually completed for those most vulnerable, especially healthcare workers, and close contact, where exposure could be a possibility. Please note, when Measles is treated, it usually dies out, and the vaccine is 100% effective.

Pardee Hospital Foundation will host its sixth annual Cornhole Tournament Saturday, April 27 from 12-5 p.m. to benefit the Pardee Sports Medicine Concussion initiative. This year’s tournament will take place at the Hendersonville Country Club tennis courts, complete with generously donated cookout favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers, Oskar Blues beer, Bold Rock cider and Pepsi products.

The event’s proceeds will go towards purchasing Riddell concussion helmets for our local Henderson County high schools. High school football is shown to be the sport with the greatest proportion of concussions, and these helmets help to alert the athletic trainers when a player has sustained a concussion-like hit.  The future goal of supplying the high schools with these helmets is to use the tracking device in conjunction with on-field evaluations, taking a proactive approach to concussion treatment.

Every year, the Pardee Hospital Foundation chooses an initiative for the Cornhole Tournament proceeds to benefit. The danger of concussion damage is prevalent in sports, and Pardee is dedicated to protecting our community athletes, especially in our high schools. If you would like to participate in the tournament, or make a donation towards the Concussion Helmet Initiative, visit pardeehospitalfoundation.org.
