PLANNING IS UNDERWAY FOR THE NEW FISCAL YEAR'S TOWN BUDGET

Property values increased in Laurel Park between 12 and 15 percent, Mayor Carey O’Cain recently reported, as a result of the latest re-valuation...meaning more income for the town.

The town’s tax rate of 43 cents per $100 of property value could see some adjustment with the new budget for FY 19-20, he said, noting that 9.5 cents per $100 of property value goes to Valley Hill Fire Department.

“Our goal is to keep the rate as low as reasonably possible,” O’Cain said.

According to O'Cain and the town council, the town will try to set a rate that can hold up until the next revaluation, set for 2023.

Road improvements are planned for Laurel Park.

O’Cain said the town is seeing an increase in road work needs, to the tune of about $250,000 or $300,000 annually, work that’s also been hampered by recent weather.

The town is continuing to try and get ahead on that schedule, but is still behind, he added.

And Laurel Park is continuing itsTown manager search

Interim Town Manager Michael Morgan reported on the search for a permanent town manager. The town has been advertising in several places for the new position, taking applications until March 14.
