Memorial Day Safety Tips
May 24, 2018

With the approach of the Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin asks all citizens to join him in making this Memorial Day holiday a happy and safe time for all.

Travel Safely

  • Buckle up for every trip.  Everyone in the vehicle should wear their seatbelts every time they are riding, or driving, in your vehicle. Wearing a seatbelt is the best defense against injuries in a drunk-driving related crash.
  • Do NOT drink and drive.  If you plan on consuming alcohol this weekend, drink responsibly and make sure you have lined up a sober, designated driver before you start your festivities.  When driving, the only safe blood alcohol level is zero.
  • Keep children safe in and around vehicles.  Make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed for any children riding with you. Don’t leave children or pets unattended in the vehicle.

Grilling Safety

  • Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors and never in a garage, porch or other enclosed space.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
  • If you plan to use a fire pit, be sure to extinguish the fire completely before leaving it unattended.

Water Safety

  • Never swim alone.
  • If no lifeguard is on duty at the pool or beach, do not let children swim unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult who knows lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Wear a life vest while boating.

Sun Safety

  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and apply it generously throughout the day.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated especially if alcohol is being consumed.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses and stay in the shade when possible.
