Henderson County Environmental Programs and the Henderson County Sherriff’s Office are partnering on a Food Waste Collection Pilot at the Detention Center. Leftover food and paper are collected in bins from the kitchen and picked up by Atlas Organics, a large-scale compost facility. The successful pilot has collected over 11,000 pounds of organic waste since it started April 2018.

“Wasted food is a national epidemic. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, up to 40 percent of the food in America is never eaten while one in eight Americans go hungry. Henderson County is working to eliminate the amount of organics entering the landfill through various programs,” says Environmental Programs Coordinator, Christine Brown.

Environmental Programs offers free backyard compost workshops throughout the year. Composting at home too much? Bring your organics to the Food Waste Collection site from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Henderson County Convenience Center, located at 265 Convenience Center Drive, Hendersonville, NC 28791.
