HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A former western North Carolina district attorney removed from office five years ago has been hired by the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office announced in a social media post on Sept. 8 that Greg Newman, who served as District Attorney for Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties from 2013-2021, was hired as the sheriff's office's new staff attorney.
Newman, who was also Hendersonville's mayor from 2005-2009, was issued a three-year stayed suspension by the state bar in 2020 for making false statements to a judge and a victim in a 2015 child rape case. He was still allowed to practice law.
A year later in 2021, families of alleged murder and rape victims signed a petition to have Newman removed from office. In April 2021, Judge Robert Ervin ruled that Newman had made false representations in court on four separate occasions and removed him from office.
