Henderson County leaders broke ground Monday on a major courthouse expansion and renovation project designed to expand the county's justice system facilities as the population grows.
The Judicial Center Addition & Renovation Project includes a new four-story courthouse addition and renovations to the existing courthouse. The project also includes seven new courtrooms, enhanced security technology and an expansion of the detention center.
"This is the largest capital improvement project in the history of Henderson County. Its budget is 101 million dollars,” said William Lapsley, chair of the Henderson County Board of County Commissioners.
The project is expected to add new district courtrooms and superior courtrooms, along with expanded space for the clerk of court.
Funding is coming through bonds and existing county appropriations, done so without a property tax increase.
The full project is expected to be completed by December 2028.
