Members of the Progressive Alliance of Henderson County gathered at the historic courthouse in downtown Hendersonville Friday, Feb. 16, for a vigil that happens every month. This vigil was aimed at bringing awareness to immigration reform.

Catherine Lynch, the lead organizer of the event, emphasized that addressing issues like immigration reform is important because immigrants play an important role in today’s society.

“We are here to try to support the idea of making laws to support compassionate immigration reform,” she said Friday.

She also spoke about the significant economic role of immigrants who migrate to the U.S.

"We need the population, we need the help in people getting jobs and paying taxes,” Lynch said.

“We’re not Texas, but we do have farming as one of the main things in Henderson County," Lynch said. "We need people to come and work in the field and work all kinds of jobs. There needs to be a process that is generally known by people that want to come to this country to work, to live, to have a better life.”

After the vigil, community members gathered at a local brewery to write to local officials addressing issues like the need for childcare, childcare workers, and ways to improve the education system.
