WHKP "kicks off" their 80th consecutive season of play-by-play high-school football broadcasts on Friday night with a 'road trip' following the North Henderson Knights to Enka to take on the Jets. '

Game time is 7:30 with broadcast starting at 7:00 PM and can heard at 107.7 FM; 1450 AM; streaming or on the brand new WHKP APP, which can be downloaded from your Playstore.

The WHKP BROADCAST TEAM is made up of Beau Lovelace, head honcho in calling the game for the past number of years with statistics 'wizard' Tim Ertzberger, and Engineer Tom Christensen.

The game is known as the WEICHERT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK. 

WHKP started broadcasting local high school football in 1946, the same year they signed on the air, from a two story broadcast booth they paid to have constructed and installed at Hendersonville High School.

Red Reeves, Sports Director of WHKP back then was the very first play-by-play announcer to ever sit behind the WHKP SPORTS MICROPHONE.  In later years, station part-owner Kermit Edney along with Chief Engineer Charlie Renfrow held down the fort for many years. 

In later years, Renfrow was joined by Doug Brooks, John Whitmire and Mike Edney, along with Times-News Sports Director Buddy Chapman as they brought much brightness and color to the broadcasts.

Later, a young broadcaster by the nane of Richard Rhodes, who played football at West High and came to work as a part-time announcer and salesman for WHKP climbed into the broadcast chair.  He was joined by Roy Huntley, owner of the Sports Cellar and one of his employees, Darla Williams. 

Along the way, Don Munson, a graduate of A;ppalachian State, joined WHKP in a full time role of broadcasting and joined the play-by-play team with Rhodes and Huntley.  Don is now the head announcer for CLEMSON FOOTBALL, Baseball and other sports at that university.

And now....this FRIDAY......the WHKP BROADCAST TEAM OF Beau Lovelace, Tim Ertzberger and Tom Christensen can hardly wait for FRIDAY NIGHT.
